Medicare News

Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment for Part D and Advantage Plans begins October 15 and runs through December 7. We have begun setting up appointments for people who met with Micki Ogilbee and Vicki Easterwood last year. The FSC volunteers will be calling you to arrange an appointment. You can, of course, call in at your convenience as well.

Micki and Vicki will also be meeting with people at the Homer Library October 22 through 24 from 9:00 am to
4:00 pm, and at the Clarence Township Hall November 15 through 16 from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. If you are interested in meeting with them at either of those alternate locations, please call the Center to make an appointment. Medicare does not require that you review your plan each year, but it is a good idea. Often there will be plans that are more economical for you than the one you have this year. The plans will often change the medicines that they cover and you may not realize that until after the deadline when you can change plans.

New Medicare Cards

Another important bit of news from Medicare is they have been mailing out new cards to everyone beginning in April of this year (2018). The cards have a new 11 character long number that is unique to you. As always, it will be very important to protect this new number. This will be an opportunity for scammers to contact people claiming to be your doctor’s office or other medical provider, and asking for your new Medicare number. Do not give this number out over the phone. Your doctor’s office can make a copy of the card the next time you have an appointment.

You may visit the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services website to learn more about the new Medicare cards. There is also a link on that page that provides the timeline for the mailing of the new cards. The new cards for Michigan residents will be mailed in October of 2018.
